A £200m Michelangelo Found Behind A Settee.

hello,

.

How goes it with you.

We are OK here but the nights are drawing in now and it is both wet and cold.

Hard to believe that we actually had some really hot tropical days last summer, thank god for the electric blanket.

.

Not much is happening here due to Big H’s lack of energy but I am now spending some intense time trying to decide on suitable Christmas presents.

I think that I will get Big H another fisherman’s ganzie this year because he still adores the last one I bought him.

He was wearing it yesterday and remembering how much he liked it.

.

I think that this time it will be a black or dark green one, because although the light colours are lovely, I don’t think they would stay very pristine for long with him and his messiness.

.

I have not yet decided what I want, but I am giving it serious thought, because I think that most men need definite direction if you want to receive a perfect present instead of red underwear or something in a colour that you have always hated wearing.

For me, that would be anything in either brown or blue, as I find most of those shades to be most depressing if I attempt to wear them.

I know that most of you love blue, but I dislike it on me personally….however I love to see a man with blue eyes in faded denim….like Steve McQueen or Paul Newman!

.

I usually like something in sterling silver, so I might have a look at that idea.

As I wear so much I should not have a problem with vampires etc.

Did you know that traditionally, silver is said to protect the wearer from evil….much more legal than walking around with an AK47 for protection!

.

In these times of recession I am also trying to find presents that are not only suitable, but are also good value for money, unless I win the lottery of course.

If I did, I would love to go shopping for presents, but it is probably highly unlikely that such a thing would ever happen.

.

Having said that though….what do you think the odds are on finding a £200m Michelangelo masterpiece stuck down behind your settee, gathering dust and crumbs.

.

It seems that a family in Buffalo, New York had a painting which was known to them by the nickname ‘ the Mike’.

It was quite small, painted upon a wooden panel and seemingly unfinished.

The family story being that it was a real work by Michelangelo and not just a copy.

.

About 27 years ago it had been put behind a sofa and forgotten about.

.

Recently, Martin Kober, 53, unearthed it again and decided to find out about it.

He eventually decided to ask an art restorer called Antonio Forcellino to examine it.

.

Imagine how it felt when the expert took a look at what he assumed would be just another copy, only to discover that the painting is probably a genuine masterpiece.

It is thought to have been painted by Michelangelo in 1545, and is a ,Pieta, showing the body of Jesus Christ being held by the Virgin Mary.

The artist would probably have painted it for Vittoria Colonna, who was a Renaissance poet and a close friend from about 1538-1542.

.

The no doubt bemused art restorer, considers it to be even more stunning than the other similar works by the artist, which are at present hanging in Florence and Rome.

After examination of the painting’s provenance, it is thought that it may have made it’s way into the Kober family back in the time of Mr. Kober’s great grandfather.

.

How likely is it that a family tale about ‘the Mike’ may well turn out to be true.

What an unusual Christmas treasure trove for them.

.

Perhaps we should all pop up to our attics and have a quick check, just in case.

Who knows.

J,x.
