Are You A Handsome Gypsy?

So, are you perhaps a handsome gypsy , or a Lascar, or of exotic mixed blood?
I read at the weekend that Andrea Arnold, who is an Oscar winning director is looking for an unknown actor to portray the brooding Heathcliff, portrayed in Emily Bronte’s classic Wuthering Heights.

There is to be a new film adaptation of the story, which will begin shooting in the summer.
.
The casting director is Gail Stevens, who famously managed to find the young actors to play the stars in Slumdog Millionaire, which was a smash hit and made millions worldwide.
The Casting Website, which allows would be actors to enter themselves on-line, has already held auditions in the Midlands, where they are also said to have looked into the possibility of their unknown actor being a member of the local Gypsy community, much to the surprise of the inhabitants of local traveller’s sites and Yorkshires Romany families.
The decision was taken that whoever plays the part must be true to the author’s original description of Heathcliff which was that he was a” dark skinned gypsy in aspect” and “a little lascar”, which being a 19th century description of sailors from India.

In the past the part has been portrayed mainly by very British actors such as Ralph Fiennes…

or the earlier.. and most excellent Laurence Olivier .

There is not much time left to discover an authentic Heathcliff, as summer will soon be here.
It will be jointly produced by Film 4 and the company who were behind the recent film ‘Nowhere Boy’,
which was about John Lennon’s early life, Ecosse Films.
