Bonkers For Conkers!

Hey there,

.

Did you hear the one about the 12 stone man and the conker?

.

Well, it seems that a certain fellow by the name of Matthew Gwynne, aged 28, was taken by a sudden impulse to re-live something he had totally enjoyed doing as a child many years before.

.

He decided, on impulse, to climb 45 feet up into a Horse Chestnut tree in Basingstoke, Hampshire- the very same one that he had often collected conkers from in those far-off halcyon days.

.

All went well at first, as he searched out the best conkers, right up until the moment the branch he was perching on cracked under his now much heavier adult weight.

.

After falling about 10 feet, he managed to stop his descent by grabbing on to another sturdier branch, but was then trapped up there in the tree, because he had broken his wrist and injured his arm.

.

He did manage to get his mobile phone out and ring 999 to ask for aid from the emergency services.

.

Eventually, about an hour later, the fireman who were called out arrived to get him safely down onto firm ground once again.

.

Afterwards he ruefully said that he had not stopped to consider that he was now very much heavier than he had been back in his schooldays.

I do hope that he gets some good ‘laggies’ out of it for his trouble!

.

So, while we must admire his sense of fun, it does prove that it does not always pay to act on impulse.

Oh, just in case you are now somewhat puzzled as to what playing conkers actually is, here is a video clip showing the World Conker Championships, one of our many strange British traditions.
.

.
And if you are now in a suitably silly mood, here is a very daft video from our Top Gear programme, showing the basic conker game that we all know and love-except that they do it with caravans!!
