Caring for An Alzheimer’s Sufferer.
Hi,
.
There are at least 400.000 people affected by Alzheimer’s in Britain at the moment.
For those dealing with a person with Alzheimer’s, or those who wonder if they could, or for those just curious about the condition there is a moving account about someone who spent years trying to cope with this awful situation.
.
A journalist called Andrea Gillies, who has contributed articles to The Guardian, The Mail and various other publications, has written a true account of her own experience, as someone who has lived through the pain of trying to deal with a family member diagnosed with the disease.
.
She was in her 40′s when she found that her in-laws, both in their late seventies, were in need of help and care.
She decided that she would move with her husband, and their three children, to the remote far north of Scotland, so that she and her husband could look after his parents themselves.
Her mother-in-law, Nancy, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and in the end it became impossible for them to cope with the worsening conditions.
Alzheimer’s has seven stages, and sufferers may not need to be helped until they reach the stage five.
Nancy was becoming increasingly violent and frustrating to cope with, until the day that her daughter-in-law finally snapped, and there is a very moving and honest account of that day in the book.
.
Her book is…
Keeper: Living with Nancy: A Journey into Alzheimer’s.
Published by Short Books.
£11.99
.
Although the book is chronicling a sad time, it may prove helpful to all the wonderful, giving, people who are trying to cope in these sad and sometimes impossible situations.
They must sometimes feel so alone and feel guilty for being only human.
