Doctors’ Advice To Gwyneth Paltrow.

Greetings once more from our very own version of ‘Groundhog Day’, that most excellent film starring Bill Murray.

I cannot believe that you don’t know what I am talking about, but if you don’t, then you need to watch it!

Now!

Once again I am writing to you from the beginning of a very grey and wet day with a glowering sky.

So what’s new!

Do you remember a post I did quite some time ago, about the fact that people are so afraid of the sun now that they are damaging their health.

For instance, most sunscreens have filters which block out UVB light rays, which are the ones to cause sunburn and are also vital for producing Vitamin D.

.

In my opinion we are meant to be exposed to whatever sunshine there is in the place where we belong because we are meant to use it to make Vitamin D.

This has been confirmed by the fact that Asians who are living in the UK have generally been found to have the lowest levels of Vitamin D in the population because they are darker skinned and therefore unable to produce enough of the essential vitamin because the Uk has a much less sunny climate.

There are now worries now that the heavily veiled women of the Middle East may be at risk from inadequate exposure to sunshine too.

.

During the 1990’s a study of about 14,000 of Bristol’s mothers-to-be found that over 90% of them were lacking in proper levels of Vitamin D.

This is something extremely important which enables our bodies to work properly on many levels.

Just this month there is research due to be published which is though to help confirm that Vitamin D is very important to ensure the healthy functioning of the many genes that control the workings of the body .

Vitamin D and the body’s DNA have a vital interaction for good health.

Dr Anne Prentice, who is the chairwoman of SACN, a Government advisory bady on  nutrition,  has confirmed that there is a problem which the government needs to address.

Soon there will be a review to try and work out how best to address the growing problem and decide how to help defeat it.

This could include such methods as adding Vitamin D to foods such as milk, as has been done by Canada and Israel.

.

Research has now made clear the link between low levels of Vitamin D and conditions such as Rickets.

It is also considered to be involved in bowel and breast cancers as well as Dementia and Multiple Sclerosis.

It is shocking to think that getting on for half of all British people have such low levels of Vitamin D that it is dangerous to their continued good health.

.

Even well known Hollywood Superstars such as Gwyneth Paltrow are not immune to these all too human problems.

She has recently said that her doctors had told her to spend more time in the sunshine because she has low levels of this necessary Vitamin D.

She was found to have been developing signs of developing the warning stages of Osteoporosis.

She was also prescribed Vitamin D supplements.

Vitamin D being important for the absorption of calcium and for phosphorus which ensures healthy bone development and healthy kidneys too..

Personally, I think that we should all try to be a bit more natural in our approach to everything, and forget about following food fads etc.

How many times have we officially been told to avoid something, only to be told at a later date that the information was incorrect.

I think that if we stay in our own place of birth and eat the natural food that grows there, when it is in season, and go about our daily business with the sun shining naturally upon us, then we cannot go far wrong.

Forget about toasting yourself in tropical sunshine.

The government should do something about the real dangers to us, like allowing the development of GM foods, injections of steroids etc. to animals which enter the food chain, and food additives in general.

We could have done without the interference in the natural food chain that led to BSE for instance.

Let’s stick to what is natural from now on.

There is Vitamin D in foods such as oily fish, egg yolk, meats  etc., but sunshine is the main thing.
