Feeling Fruity?

Hi,

.

Wow, matters here are improving daily.

This morning I am the very grateful recipient of about 25% cloud and heavy duty sunshine.

Wehay!

.

How is everything with yourself….I hope that it is good….after all it is Wednesday!

Just think of it as being halfway to the weekend, and, some fun, and a lie-in.

.

A good opportunity to party, drink and be merry….and eat fruit.

Of course you will not need as much fruit to eat as, let’s say, a British Labour minister of health apparently does.

Obviously, although they kept telling us to eat ‘five a day’, they truly believed that the more fruit you eat the healthier you are.

.

When a Conservative health secretary called Andrew Lansley was looking at previous Labour expenditure, to try and find ways to cut down on spending, he discovered that all five previous Labour health ministers believed that if ‘five a day’ was a good idea, then even more would be even healthier, for the each been supplied with £8 of fruit per day for the past 13 years.

Believe it or not, this added up to an unbelievable expenditure of more than £100,000.

On free fruit….well, free to them anyway!

.

Now, somewhat late in the day, ministers have been told to buy their own fruit in future.

.

Make sure you eat five a day too, and have some fruit too!

J,x.

    hey Jackie,
Does grape count as a fruit? specifically, wine?
    Does wheat count? Beer…

    I think I’m getting my 10 a day and then some :)
in all seriousness, my province produces enough apples to feed every man, woman, child, and martian .. so there is no shortage of fruits here, especially in our pseudo-summer.
plus we have fantastic grapes from the niagara region – some of them are like jellos – soft and jiggly :) just let me know if you need a basket and i’ll send some to the UK. I’d settle for some scones from England.

    Have a great Thursday =]

      Hey,
      .
If we are going to include the origins of things as the fruit and veg itself then I have overkill too, what with the wine from the grapes, the cider from the apples and the roasted barley from the Guinness!!!!
      .
Your province sounds like fruit heaven….lucky you!
      .
I wonder what your national dish is?
      Have a good one,

    hey Jackie-
in terms of veg + fruit, Ontario’s not bad at all. there are farms practically everywhere and in the summertime you can go buy produce fresh from the farmers. My uni was in a very agri-oriented “city” so I got spoiled there with gorgeous farm landscapes and the proximity Niagara on the lake

As for the national dish, that confused me a little. I never thought about it because I don’t think we have anything “Canadian” per se. I mean, we have “Bacon” — but that’s not a dish (well not to most people anyway).
So i did a twitter question to see what my fellow Canucks thought, and … we think it’s more provincial. So I’ll get back to you with a few answers on each province :)

    cheers-
    nelly.

      Hey,
      .
Most interesting info, all of that easily sourced fresh produce sounds great, especially if you are like me and love to eat stuff that was freshly picked just before you bought it.
I personally hate the whole idea of buying food in a special sealed and treated ‘atmosphere’ that keeps it fresh for a ridiculous length of time.
      .
We have a lot of what we call British food, for instance….Bangers and Mash….Fish and chips, and many regional foods such as Black Pudding….Pease Pudding…..Lancashire Hot Pot….Geordie Stottie Cake….London’s Jellied Eels…. Welsh Lava Bread and of course the Scottish choice of Haggis and the delicious Bannock.

One of my personal favourites is Bubble and Squeak! My mum used to make us that on a Monday night, using the leftovers from the Sunday dinner, because a Monday was wash day and very tiring, so something quick and easy to make was very welcome.

I do love freshly picked goodies. during june-august, we go and pick our own berries, peas, etc.. it’s cheaper anyway, you just pay by the basket and stuff it senseless :)
in fact, this sunday is strawberry-picking day so we have jams and preserves for the winter time :)

i also don’t like the supermarket for it’s impersonal relationship with the customer. It’s not that I want to be friends with the cows, but I like meeting the farmers behind the products. Hearing their stories makes me feel attached to the area more than anything. It’s actually quite an amazing thing to know you provide food and nourishment for those around you. A noble – if not a very difficult- job. And oftentimes it’s undervalued.

I did try tons of your food when I was in the UK. Loved bangers & Mash, there were a few pubs in london and by the docks a short walk from Camden market that had some great traditional food. Fish and chips were good too, but I wasn’t a fan of the black or yorkshire pudding. It’s just not my sort of thing really. I’ve never had “Geordie stottie” cakes, or eels, but I did try Scottish Haggis when I was up in the highlands & Edinburgh, stovies, Scotch pie, an Hotchpotch (no thanks, never again to this one).

Yeah.. I like to sample traditional dishes wherever I go. Wish is great if it’s all followed by great hikes and the like, but I find the UK very social and ended up racking in the pounds meal after meal, beer after beer, or in your world, “shout after shout”.

    have a great friday!

      Hi,
      Mmmmm….I love strawberries a lot.
We used to grow lots of them in an allotment garden and I brought back many pounds of them day after day….and consumed every one!
      .
I especially like the fact that strawberries make your teeth white and act as a cleanser for the whole body, being a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and thought to fight some cancers….so good for you, quite apart from being irresistible in colour, smell and taste.
      .
      Mmmm….hate tennis*….love strawberries.
*Apart from watching Boris Becker in his prime.
What a pretty, pretty strawberry blonde he was.

      Have a fun weekend,
