New 20mph Speed Limit.

Hey,

.

At the moment we have a 30mph speed limit for most town centres and residential roads.

.

There has recently been a trial of a 20mph (32kph) limit in places such as in Edinburgh, Portsmouth , Hull, York and Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and it has been judged to be a successful innovation.

.

Ministers are now said to be in favour of introducing a 20mph ban on all other town centres and residential streets, although the busy through roads would be left at the present limit of 30mph.

They feel that this will reduce the levels of fatalities and therefore make the streets much safer for both pedestrians and for cyclists.

.

Child injury and death would be significantly reduced if this restriction is generally imposed.

The UK has one of the worst European records for child pedestrian deaths on the roads.

A horrifying 140 children per year are killed in this way.

.

Since last year, local authorities have had the power to impose the 20mph urban areas restriction, and eight London boroughs have said that they also plan to do this.

.

Motoring groups are angered by the new proposals.
