Now You See It….Now You Don’t.

Hello Monday,

.

After a weekend of rubbish weather, and extremely frizzy hair from the dampness, I was once again thinking of how much nicer it would be to live down in a place like Cornwall where it is warm enough to support some quite tropical plants.

And oh, the lure of more sunshine and much warmer winters.

.

I was therefore, a bit taken aback, to read about some walkers who were high on the Cornish cliffs at the end of September.

.

They were proceeding along happily, enjoying the awesome scenery at a point near Redruth, when they noticed something happening to the cliff face a little way in ahead of their position.

.

First they saw what appeared to be small puffs of dust rising into the air, closely followed by the formation of tiny cracks.

.

They managed to film the strange happenings….and were witnesses to a huge portion of the cliff face falling off.

.

Some reports stated that the fall occurred at a site Hell’s Mouth, which was very apt, but luckily no one was hurt in this particular instance.

.

Coastal erosion had struck once more.
How scary is this.
.

.
I don’t think I would have stood so close to those cliff edges to film it myself!
.
This is more film at the same site two weeks later on October 8th.
.

.

Of Course, this is not an unusual happening, because coastal erosion is ongoing.
In the past, during the time of the Foot and Mouth scare, there was a collapse of the 200′ Devil’s Chimney, which rose from the cliff at at Beachy Head….a famous spot for suicides.
.

Experts say that the waves are ever growing bigger and stronger, perhaps due to global warming, and obviously the collapse at Beachy Head not helped by over 1,000,000 visitors per year who are luckily not suicidal!
.
This film is from the BBC.
.

.
The next clip shows the speed of coastal erosion in parts of the UK.
.
It was taken over a period of one year….from 15th January 2005 through to 15th January 2006.
.
One photo was taken every 15 minutes, on land 60m south of Martello Tower W, East Lane, Bawdsey, Suffolk….looking south toward Harwich and Felixstowe.
.

The film is titled ‘Line Of Defence’.
.

.

Is that scary or what!!!
