Rain, Rain Go Away!

Hi,

.

Good morning to yourself.

And so we all begin a new week, all untouched as yet!

.

It is still the usual here, with grey skies and if not rain, then the definite threat of rain because of slow-moving low pressure over the UK..

I went out to feed the birds this morning and was surprised to see that the wheelbarrow that I had left out on the patio is almost filled up with rain.

Tremendous…..but the birds probably find it very handy to be provided with both food AND drink.

.

Of course nothing is ever properly in balance and soon the cries of drought will be replaced with warnings of nationwide flooding again, because of all the grossly swollen rivers.

Ho Hum!.

The warning forecast from the Met Office is that the heavy rainstorms will continue to keep on coming for some time.

Obviously it is true what they say about St Swithin’s Day then!

.

It has always been said, by older people like my own mum, that if it rains on St Swithin’s day- July 15th- then it will rain for the next 40 days following it.

.

For those of you who are puzzled by that, I should mention that the Anglo-Saxon gentleman in question lived in the mid 800’s AD and was the Bishop of Winchester, which is a city about one hour south-west of London, and which was the capital of England during Saxon Times.

.

So there you are then….on the best scientific authority!!!!!

.

You will probably have a damp one, as there does not seem to be much choice.

At least we don’t shrink when we are immersed in water.

From Holidays To Hummingbirds.

Hi Peeps,

.

Greetings to you from an extremely wet UK.

It seems that we have had nothing but ferocious downpours and high winds for ages.

.

You get up in the morning to the accompaniment of drumming rain and then retire at night to the some beat.

I have to say though, that lying in a warm bed and listening to the rain hit the windows is one of life’s pleasures for me.

Along with Marmite!

.

The other benefit is that everything looks to be washed sparkling clean and my pretty hanging baskets are positively technicolour and gorgeous.

And, of course, we are not being warned about droughts anymore either.

.

Big H and I have still managed our daily constitutional walks by spontaneously dashing out the moment that it looks like the rain has stopped for a while.

We had a splendid walk the other day when the dark skies and rain suddenly stopped and blue patches appeared quite quickly because of the wind.

We hurried out, and amazingly enjoyed hot sunshine and almost totally clear sky.

.

It was a long walk for us and we did not meet anyone else.

When we neared our house again, we saw the dark clouds heading in once more, and rain began to pour down as we opened our front door.

That was a good one!!!

.

It is funny really, because the British are great ones for their ‘very neccessary’ holidays in the sun, and this year it is not happening.

.

It seems that the recession has caused such a tightening of the purse strings that people are having to make cuts to all unnecessary expenditure.

Utility bills are rising quickly, the pound is not as strong, and basic things such as foodstuffs are more expensive too.

.

It has become so bad that the holiday firms are being left with unwanted holidays, and much reduced profits.

They are trying to counter this by cutting the cost of going abroad by offering reductions of over 50% on holidays….even over the most popular periods such as school breaks.

I expect that for those who time it exactly right, there will be amazing deals to be done, and the consumer will truly benefit for once.

.

Of course there are strange things that can happen when you decide upon these flights.

Do you remember the ladies who tried to take a dead relative on a flight!

And this week a dead horse was found on an Israeli cargo plane which flew in from Belgium to the John F Kennedy International Airport in New York.

.

The animal was reported to be a European Warmblood, which was worth about £87,000, and was about a year old.

It belonged to an owner in Illinois.

.

The flight was of about 8 hours duration and the cause of death is a mystery which may be solved by an autopsy.

Sad!

.

I was cheered up though when I was looking at this clip on YouTube.

it shows a Wild Alaskan Hummingbird drinking nectar from someones hand.

What a pretty little thing.

.

I tracked the film back and found that it came from the website of a holiday place called Saltery Lodge, in Alaska.
.

.

.

Upon further examination of their interesting site, I found this nice clip about a mother bear which is teaching it’s cubs to fish in their area.
.

.
It seems that the films were taken by Scott Kemp, who owns the lodge.
.

He has his own photography site if you would like more good stuff….I really like his work.

Here is the link to his beautiful photography.

.

However, given that I am a fraidy-cat I would be afraid to be so near to such big wild animals, so just as well the recession will stop me going there and frightening myself with reality!

Have a bear-free one yourself

The high point of the day

Is toast and Marmite

Cut into little fingers,

And then there’s the postman,

Bringing the promise of a letter,

Or something unexpected.

Banksy’s Work Is Destroyed. Bloody People With White Paint!

Hi,

.

It seems that Banksy, the Bristol born mysterious and iconic graffiti artist is not perhaps as well known in some parts of our society as we might have supposed that he was.

.

Banksy at Bristol City Museum. 2009.
.

.

.

In his hometown there are many familiar and well loved graffiti images stencilled about the place….like the ‘Gorilla In A Pink Mask’  images.

.

On Fishponds Road there is a well known building which used too be the ‘North Bristol Social Club’.

.

This has now become a Muslim Cultural Centre, and Saeed Ahmed decided that he would tidy it up a bit by removing the unsightly graffiti on the walls by the vigorous application of bright white paint….all over the very popular artwork.

.

Local people who then passed by were saddened to discover that the well-loved and cheering gorilla image was gone.

.

The unknowing perpetrator of the art crime has now asked the Director of the International Fine Art Conservation Studios to help him reveal the valuable artwork once more.

Mr. Pelter is going to give it his best try.

.

Let us hope that all of the other admired works by Banksy, such as Love Cheat and Police Sniper And Boy are kept safe from the ‘people who tidy up’.

.

I suppose that it could have been worse though…. he could have used magnolia paint!!!

.

Banksey leaves wonderful surprises for the public and definitely brightens their days.

Poem: Friend.

Friend.

.

.

Each time I take a walk

Along by the river

It is a pleasure.

Though not so much the water,

The hanging trees,

Or pillowed grass,

As much as it is

The large and purry cat

Who lies in the dust of pink flowers,

Waiting to greet me.

Ariel Needs Your Help.

Hi,

.

Something a bit sad for you today.

.

In Brazil there is a beautiful lion, owned by Raquel Borges.

He is called Ariel and he is a massive 140 kg in weight.

He is also paralysed now and cannot use his legs at all.

.

Unfortunately he became ill last year, with a bad degenerative auto-immune condition, where his white blood cells are destroying his healthy cells.

This was thought to be caused by a virus.

.

He first began limping last year and underwent surgery for a herniated disc.

Afterwards his front legs were found to be paralysed.

.

He is now being looked after by his vet, Livia Teixeira, who has taken him into her home in order to give him the best care possible.

.

.

It is costing about £7,000 pcm for his care and treatment.

.

People all over the world are donating money to help, via his site and his facebook page.

Because of this various experts are testing him to try and find out exactly what can be done to bring about his recovery.

.

Now there is a lot of publicity about Ariel and his condition, he will hopefully recover because so many people really care about him.

.

Ariel’s Website…..for English speakers.

This is the link to the….facebook page…. where people who can read Spanish have been making donations to help with the treatment costs.

.

He looks lovely….he reminds me of the ‘most beautiful thing’ post….still one of my favourite things!

.

Fingers crossed for Ariel!

Later News. 28th July.

Sadly Ariel died at the end of July despite everyone doing all that they could for him.

Kissy, Kissy.

Hey,

.

New ideas are good in any situation….and of course in artistic endeavours.
It does not matter what you think of it, because just the act of watching and forming the opinion that you have of it is stimulating.

.

I was reading about a woman called Natalie Irish, an artist from Houston, Texas. .
She was blotting her lips one day, and got an idea while looking at the resulting lipstick imprint on the tissue.

.

Her idea was born and tried out.
This is the artworks that she did as a result.

.

Lipstick kisses making a painting.
.
.

What do you think of it!
Do you like it or are all of your kisses still going to be bestowed on a lucky person!

Shedding A Little Light In A Naughty World.

Hi,

.

Today I thought That I would be a bit of a bright spark and talk about a very special and well-loved thing.

.

Something which has a fan club of thousands and is well admired world-wide.

.

Are you sitting comfortably?

Then I’ll begin….

.

On June 18th 2011, a hand blown light bulb, with a carbon filament of four watts, began lighting up the 110th year of it’s long working life.

.

It was invented by a gentleman named Adolphe Chailet, who was one of the less successful contemporaries of Thomas Edison, and produced by the Shelby Electric Company.

.

The amazing bulb hangs in the Livermore Fire Station, California, in the USA.

It has been moved many times during it’s working life, but has never failed to give unfailingly good service to the firemen.

.

The Guinness Book Of Records have declared it to be the oldest known working light bulb in the world.

No small feat!

.

It is very famous and well loved, even having it’s own website.

If you want to be really anoraky….you can sit and watch it in real time….with an update every 10 seconds.

I hope that you liked the post, as it always does you good to enjoy a little light entertainment!

To Pee Or Not To Pee.

Hi,

.

As I am sure that we would all agree, weekends are excellent opportunities for a bit of fun…..food, drink, friends, and a bit of a laugh.

However, it is possible to go to far….or perhaps not far enough, in order to reach a proper toilet!

.

It is against the law to pee in the streets in the UK.

.

But what do you do when you regularly complain that every weekend drunken revellers use the street outside of your home as a toilet, and it keeps on happening.

.

One man in Hoxton, who lives near the popular Old Street, where late night drinking licences have been granted, decided to try and do something about it himself.

.

He has begun filming the offending people and warning them that they are going to go onto YouTube immediately.

Needless to say, he has had a lot of support!

.

.
No wonder it is called ‘getting pissed!.
.

It is also terrifying how some people seem to develop a death wish when they get so drunk that they cannot function, just like the woman who was so drunk that she fell onto the railway tracks in front of a train.
