Peter Davies. Mayor Of Doncaster. This Is No ‘Yes-Man’.

Recently, a friend of mine, who lives in France, asked me what I thought about Peter Davies….Mayor of Doncaster in South Yorkshire.
.
I confessed that I had no idea who she was talking about, so she sent me a follow-up e-mail about him.
Because of that I have something very unusual for you today….I have found a politician who has tried to do exactly what he said he would do if he were elected.

This is definately not a case of ‘too many chiefs and not enough indians’.
.
Big Chief Peter Davies is rocking the politics of Doncaster now that he is the elected Mayor.
.
When he was elected in 2009, on a four year term, he had won on the promise to examine council spending and make the streets safe from yobs, along with many other firm ideas.
.
The new Mayor then began as he intended to continue….with knobs on!
His Mayor’s salary was a hefty £73,000 but he immediately cut it to a much more modest £30,000.
.
He decided that it would be sensible to cancel the newspaper that the Council pubished, on the grounds that it was merely ‘peddling politics on the ratepayer’s money’.
.
His search for money saving cuts money continued unabated.
He found that there were many things he wished to change.
.
Doncaster was twinned with as many as 9 other places around the world.
The Mayor decided that Doncaster would be better if it was untwinned, as he considered that the idea merely led to a further waste of resources, which then led to people flying off to other climes for a junket at the taxpayer’s expense.

He also decided that he did not need a chauffer-driven limousine so he axed that perk, although he was considerate enough to continue employing the no-longer-wanted driver in another capacity.

There have been many reports of his ideas on running the council, such as his thought that having 63 Doncaster councillors was patently not needed if 100 Senators could run the USA.
He then worked out that reducing the numbers of councillors in that way would be a saving of another £800,000.
And also saying that an impressive saving of £200,000 could be made by withdrawing from the Local Government information Unit, and the Local Government Association, the grounds for doing so being that these talking heads were not providing anything useful for Doncaster.

If the council stopped funding things such as the Black History Month, Doncaster’s International Woman’s Day and the Lesbian,Gay, Bisexual and Transgender History Month, it would free more money that could then be spent on other, more important, key services.
.
Mr Davies is determined that as Mayor he will reduce costs. in order to spend the monies which would then be made available, on necessary things for the people who voted for him.
This retired teacher knows Doncaster well, having been born there, and he cares about the welfare and the wellbeing of the local people.

When he stood for election it was as a candidate for the English Democrats.
.
He seems to feel that he is well in touch with the common concerns in the UK today, which are that the politicians are not listening to what concerns the people….and what these sensible and ordinary people want for their own country.
It is actually quite true that the politicians are often totally at odds with public opinion about the EU and the Court Of Human Rights decisions, education, policing, political correctness and many, many, many other subjects.

I think that in many ways he sounds like a breath of fresh air.
In fact, I think that he should be cloned immediately, and then ‘HE’ can govern this country.
My friend is an admirer, although it seems that some of his fellow politicians may not be.
