an old alternative to retail therapy

years ago people made things themselves
especially at easter and christmas,
they used to sit together for many hours
cutting up paper to make decorations,
sticking them together with smelly glue.
.
they looked excellent when they were up
so it always felt extremely festive.
.
as for easter, that was always about eggs
which would first be hard boiled
and deeply stained with coloured dyes
before painting bright and happy smiles
onto their rainbow easter faces
.
eating them was always more exciting
than it was eating the ordinary ones,
nobody bothers with things like that now
so they have no idea what they are missing
