Race Memories.

Bonjour,

.

No, don’t you worry, it is still me.

I just though I would add a little sophistication to the proceedings.

.

Well, they always do it with perfumes don’t they.

If it is advertised with a French accent then it must be better!

.

Alors.

.

It is pleasant here today.

In other words, it is not raining, you have to be thankful for what you can get in life.

.

After I had written the recent blog about things that scare us, I had a few afterthoughts.

Yes, I know what you are all thinking.

If I did a bit more housework and a bit less messing about, then I would not have the energy for weird thoughts to be so indulged.

You are probably right, but I am just lucky.

.

I was wondering if the reason that people develop their various fears is because of the things that happened to their ancestors.

Things which come to them as a sort of family/race memory, which can be activated by a similar happening, or which just lies unknown beneath the surface affecting different things.

.

For instance .

Yesterday afternoon I was thinking about how it would be to live on a Scottish Island.

Would you be accepted easily or not, by people who have integrated into a quite introverted way of life.

Or would they only accept you easily if you were the same type as them, not too different in your expectations of proper behaviour.

.

Then, I wondered what it would be like if they accepted you at first and then you somehow spoiled it, quite inadvertantly.

Through no fault of your own at all.

.

Say that you were all getting along quite wonderfully.

Everything is perfect.

.

Until the day you are looking on the web and see an advert for a Theatrical Costumier’s bankruptcy auction.

.

Now, I don’t know about you but I have a real weakness for military style coats and jackets.

The more braid, epaulettes, flaps and buttons the better. Preferably in black, although the red, grey or white would be acceptable.

.

Now suppose that this person on the island in Scotland has very similar tastes….and puts a bid in on a beautiful red military jacket with lots of fancy piping….just a low bid punt….but they win.

Wow, what a stroke of luck.

How amazing is that.

A beautiful British military style jacket!

Very cheering to wear a bright red colour on a dour Island day.

.

Now, is it possible that the poor English incomer could begin to feel uncomfortable somehow.

Could feel that they are not as popular as they thought that they were.

Could they somehow feel that things have changed indefinably.

.

Is it possible that on some deeper level the English voice, allied with the military coat, could stir the racial/atavistic/ancestral mind at deep levels because of the past hatred of the English and the historical invasions and cruel clearances in the Highlands.

.

No one would realize what was happening.

The islanders would just say to each other that “I don’t know what it is, but I am no longer so sure that the newcomer is a desirable person.  I cannot quite put my finger on it but I feel that there is something not right about them!”

It would not take long.

.

Could that happen or not?

.

It also Brought back a scary memory of my own childhood.

.

We were visiting my uncle and aunt in Sunderland and my Dad took me for a breath of fresh air down beside the sea.

.

I was chattering away, holding his left hand and looking up at him happily.

I suddenly glanced up and to my right hand side.

MY GOD, I was totally terrified.

.

There was a huge ship moored to the harbour rings, and it’s front just kept swelling up and out over the quayside.

We had walked beneath it, all pinky and rusty, until it was looming up over me.

I had dreams about it for years.

I still clearly recall it now with a shudder, so many years later.

.

I always look away if I am watching a film of a huge ship and there is any chance of getting a view up at it from the water.  Bloody scary.

Is that because I once got a fright for no real reason….or could it be because some ancestor was shipwrecked in the war and was pulled beneath a ship or something similar….or do I just have far too much imagination for my own good.

.

I find the thought interesting.

Have a brilliant Monday,

.
