Tim Parks. A Sceptic’s Search For Health.
Hi,
What a warm morning this is, I think that our recent and very welcome heatwave is continuing for a while longer, even though the sky is a heavy pale grey this morning with a fine drizzle of rain.
.
It has been so sunny for the last few days that everyone is beginning to look somewhat tanned.
.
I was reading recently about the novelist called Tim Parks.
He is very well known, having written many books including fourteen novels such as Tongues Of Flame and Loving Roger.
.
He is English, being born in 1954 in Manchester, and he was educated, I believe, at Cambridge University and at Harvard.
He is Associated Professor of Literature and translation at IULM University, Milan.
.
I tell you this so that the following information is based upon a solid and respected foundation, just in case the man is new to you.
.
In 2005, when he was approximately 50 years of age, he developed a strange physical pain.
It then grew into many different and crippling pains, affecting many parts of the body,
including the stomach, thighs, back, and the penis.
Eventually he was in continual chronic pain and was also peeing blood.
He seemed to be dying!
.
Various doctors could find no cause, until eventually he was told that it was a prostate problem, and that it could be cured by drugs and an operation.
He somehow was not happy with this explanation and he refused.
.
Soon after, while visiting India, he went to see an Ayurvedic doctor.
Previous to this he had not been at all interested in any forms of alternative medicine, but he was desperate to find some acceptable solution to his awful health problems.
.
He was told by this doctor, who had listened to everything that he had to say, that he was in pain because he was being torn by the way that he had lived his life.
The cerebral part and the physical part were not in balance and this was causing all of the symptoms he was suffering from.
It would not stop until he got himself into balance.
.
Back home once more, he found a book which he would not normally have thought to read.
It was titled ‘A Headache In The Pelvis’, written by David Wise and Rodney Anderson, and it said that pain is caused by stress and the inability to relax.
.
Soon after this he surprised himself by going on a retreat for 10 days of silence in Tuscany.
He was taught to meditate and began to relax and to physically feel the release of tension in his body.
.
He now meditates for an hour every morning and he is healed of all of his pain because he has stopped living only in his head while regarding his body only as a means to house his mind and intellect.
He feels that he has reconnected with his physical body again.
.
How many people are now living in the way that he was.
They are alive in their minds, and on the Internet, and i Pod’s etc, but they are frenetic and confrontational even in things like sport and their social life,
I think that many people now do not step onto a natural surface from one year to another.
They have no real connection to the earth at all.
.
Tim Parks has begun writing again, but alongside his meditation, aware of the importance of living fully in the physical moment.
So, if this post has caught your attention, then you should follow this link which will give you his website.
He has written a book about his journey over those harrowing four or five years of his life.
It is called ‘ Teach Us To Sit Still’ and is due to be issued by Random House on July 1st 2010.
It will cost you £12.99 and that has to be a bargain!
.
Have a fine day.
