What else do we all miss!
Hello,
.
Are you enjoying your weekend?
Are you having fun?
.
It has been a good one for me so far.
.
Yesterday it was a fine day here, with blue skies and fair bit of sunshine.
Big H and I took full advantage of it by going for a long walk by the riverside.
Because it was so muddy we did not meet very many other people, so it was very quiet, almost like walking on your very own huge estate.
.
We did meet a young woman who was accompanied by a young greyhound bitch.
The puppy was a very dignified and quiet dog who came forward to meet us.
There was no barking or jumping up with her muddy feet either, she just leaned quietly against our legs and enjoyed being stroked.
When you have had dogs for most of your married life it is peculiar not to have one any longer.
Big H really enjoys these ‘off the cuff’ encounters with them, but afterwards he gets quite pensive.
.
We also saw a lot of different birds.
.
A long time ago, when my youngest son was still living at home, he and I would sometimes take the dog out for a walk together.
He is very knowledgeable about nature and taught me the names of all the birds, trees and plants.
I felt just like David Attenborough!
.
Unfortunately, as time has gone by, I have forgotten a lot of it, through disuse.
I can however remember enough to surprise Big H sometimes.
.
It is amazing how many things you just don’t notice, even though they are in full view, right under your nose.
.
One day my son said to me, ‘My goodness, look at that huge Shield Beetle!.’
‘What Shield Beetle’ said I.
He pointed to a big leaf on a tree, which was directly on my own eye level.
I still could not see anything at all.
He pointed closer….and then I suddenly saw it clearly….how could I have missed it
.
It was a large, bright green beetle in the shape of a shield, like the ones carried by knights in times gone by.

.
.
Once you see these things, you cannot believe that they have been invisible to you throughout most of your life.
What else do we all miss!
.
Later on, when Big H and I were enjoying a walk, I did the same thing to him.
I pointed out a Shield Beetle on a leaf.
He could not see anything so I pointed much closer to it….suddenly there it was….and he was amazed that he could have missed seeing something so big and bright.
It was exactly the same as I had been when the other one was revealed to me.
Big H was extremely impressed and I enjoyed that a lot!
.
It just goes to show that however much you learn, you stil don’t know a lot in relation to all the available information.
.
My own mind may be a bit peculiar.
It is almost as if it can only hold a certain amount of information at any time.
Almost as if it is a library with room for only a set number of books.
If more than that level of books are put in then some of the older ones are removed to make way for the newer ones.
Perhaps the excess knowledge just gets put in storage and is merely unavailable rather than completely destroyed
.
Sometimes when I cannot remember something which I know I did find out about in the past, I try a simple method of data retrieval.
First I make my mind totally quiet.
Then ask a question inside my head.
eg. What was the name of a particular person I met at so and so’s wedding. Please find out and let me know as soon as possible.
I then forget all about it.
.
Often I will wake up in the morning with the answer, or it will just pop into my head, fully complete, a while later.
It stops me thinking that I am going senile.
For a while at least!
.
It is still a pleasant day, so I think that we will probably treat ourselves to the papers, a nice pub lunch and yet another fine walk.
Nice work if you can get it!
.
Have a good Sunday yourself.
