With Many A Winding Turn.
Hey,
.
And that brings us back to Monday, which so far is promising to be a quiet day.
.
It is warm, grey and damp again this morning, and I am suffering.
We went for a short and muddy walk yesterday and it has resulted in us having lots of bites from some kind of fly, obviously brushing through long grass and weeds after the rain is a very bad idea.
.
It began as lots of angry little red spots but has now blossomed into large red swellings that are extremely sore and itchy.
Bloody flies, to think that I catch them and expel them outside when they come into the house, and then they do this.
They are as ungrateful as my crows..
.
Speaking of crows, they were very keen on their breakfast offerings this morning, which was the remains of some delicious shortcrust pastry meat pies.
These are one of Big H’s favourite things, which he likes stuffed with as much meat as you can get in them.
I cannot really enjoy stuff like that very often now because of the bloating that wheat causes but I was tempted enough to eat a small portion, after all we were not going out anywhere afterwards, and it was absolutely delicious.
.
I wonder if things are more tempting when you are not allowed to have them….I think the answer would be a resounding ‘Yes’ and it would apply to most bad choices that people make.
The grass is always greener etc. and the lure of the forbidden!
.
That is the verse in k.d. lang’s version of ‘Hallelujah’ that I like best.
( I think that it is about King David seeing Uriah’s wife being ritually bathed up on her roof in the evening and being so overcome with lust that he sends for her to come to him.
He lies with her and she becomes pregnant.
King David recalls her husband from battle, in the hope that he will sleep with her and cover up the adultery
Uriah, an honourable man, refuses to sleep with his wife while his men are lying in the fields of battle, so David sends messages that Uriah is to fight in the most dangerous place so that he will be killed…leaving his wife obtainable.
And it was so.)
.
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
.
I still listen to k.d’s version a lot because I find it very moving and sad.
However, she does miss out the one very explicit verse that Leonard Cohen wrote…
.
There was a time you let me know
What’s really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
.
This is Leonard Cohen’s version of Hallelujah.
And I think that it changes the whole perception of the song, which seems to actually be about the way needing a woman can weaken a man.
A lot of people seem to think that it is a godly song about mankind…. but I suppose that it is actually.
I think that Leonard Cohen is brilliant.
He is an amazingly good poet.
.
We all loved him when we were young, in fact Big H bought me one of his records as a present, but I was disappointed because it had been produced by Phil Spector, who was the master of ‘the wall of sound’.
.
Example of the ‘Wall Of Sound’…. Da Do Ron Ron by The Ronettes.
Isn’t it funny how lives work out.
A very reluctant Leonard Cohen was forced to go back on the road at 75, after a 15 year absence, when he found that his manager had stolen $5million of his money.
It turned out to be a triumph for him and the tour was given rave reviews.
He is so popular that the audiences gave him standing ovations the moment he appeared .
With his usual wry humour he told them to sit back down, because they were making him nervous as he kept thinking that they were going to walk out.
.
Phil Spector became increasingly strange and ended up being arrested for murder.
He was found guilty of second degree murder and sentenced to 19 years to life.
.
Life is indeed a strange beast.
So have a good day today.
J’x.
